Our US tax system is an abomination.
Several years back we decided to increase the non-US portion of our portfolio.
So we had to begin dealing with things like foreign tax credits. This has always been a nuisance due to inadequate reporting by brokerages.
While that reporting has improved, it is still slow - we just got a major rewrite of several of our big 1099s *after* I had already calculated the taxes.
But on top of things, the US seems to have made the tax filing obligations far more complicated in what seem quite irrelevant ways - like reporting the basis of *all* investments in order to support a foreign tax credit for one.
We have been trying to simplify our lives - and our tax filings have reflected this - the page count a few years back had dropped to about 50 pages. Now, despite more simplifications in our lives and finances, we are back to the 200 page range!!
I am sure that much of this is caused by law enforcement trying to catch cheaters, but wow it affects law abiders as well.
